Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams’ woeful comeback from injury continues with defeat in both singles and doubles in the World Team Tennis tournament.

Williams, 34th in the WTA rankings, lost 5-4 to 66th ranked Christina McHale in a one-set singles match, before falling 5-1 in doubles with partner Rennae Stubbs at the hands of McHale and Madison Brengle.

But Williams, showing no sign of the injury that sidelined her from the Australian Open, went on to win 5-3 in mixed doubles with India’s Leander Paes and avowed that confidence was returning to her game.

“I feel good about my game. Me being here means I’m healthy enough to play,” Williams said.

“I have just been relaxing, taking it easy. It’s time to gear up and get myself started again. This is how I’ve started my summers for several years and I’m excited to be out here again.”

The five-time Wimbledon champion has not won a Grand Slam title since 2008, but the 31-year-old vows that she is far from finished as a force in women’s tennis.

“It has been a privilege to set a level at the top of the game,” she said.

“While I’m playing well, I’ll be trying to dominate on the court.”

Williams is relishing the prospect of adding to her three Olympic titles next year in London – especially as the mixed doubles has now been introduced.

“I’m looking forward to the Olympics,” she said.

“When I enter three events, I’m going to try to win three events.”
