History of U.K. Football
Sport Articles October 9th. 2011, 12:55pmThe origin of Football dates back to as early as the 8th century in the United Kingdom, but football as we know it started in Cambridge University in 1848 and the Football Association (FA) was set up in 1863 in England. At around the same time, similar Football Associations were set up in Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The English Football Association met for the first time on 26th October. On December 8 1863, they laid down the laws of the game that are the basis of the current laws adopted by FIFA. A parallel FA was set up in Sheffield.
Hence, the first club to be set up in the UK was Sheffield FC and the first match was between Sheffield FC and Hallam FC on 1862. The FA Cup is the oldest knockout competition in the world and it was set up in 1871. The first ever international football match was held between England and Scotland and ended in a 1-1 draw. The first football league, known then as the Association Football League, was set up in 1888. By 1892-93 the league had two divisions and at the turn of the century, 40 clubs were a part of the League. The Football results would determine their position/promotion/relegation in the league.
