Cowboy all-SLC academic selections Bourgeois, Briscoe, LeBlanc and Savoie honored

McNeese State’s Ben Bourgeois, Wes Briscoe, Alec Savoie and Eric LeBlanc have been named to the 2011 Southland Conference football all-academic team.

For Bourgeois, the team punter, it’s his second straight year to be named to the squad. Briscoe, Savoie and LeBlanc were named for the first time.

Bourgeois, who was also named to the CoSIDA district VI academic team and to the FCS athletic directors academic all-star team for the second straight year, played as a graduate student this past season after receiving his degree in Engineering.

The native of Sulphur, compiled a 4.00 grade point average during his college career.

Briscoe, a wide receiver from Baton Rouge, is a sophomore and carries a 3.15 overall grade point average in Health and Human Performance while Savoie, a junior offensive lineman from Lafayette, has a 3.10 average in Government and LeBlanc, a junior defensive end from Erath, holds a 3.73 grade point average in Health Education.

During the past football season, Bourgeois started all 11 games for the Cowboys as the punter and averaged 35.9 yards a punt. Opponents averaged only 3.9 yards per punt return this season and Bourgeois had 15 of his punts fall inside the 20 with four being over 50 yards in distance.

Briscoe led the Cowboys in yards per reception with a 22.4 yard average on 17 catches. He covered 380 yards with his receptions and scored one touchdown.

Savoie missed three games because of injuries and started eight games at offensive tackle, being credited with 12 pancake blocks and 24 knockdowns.

LeBlanc was credited with 14 tackles and three stops behind the line. His single game high came against Texas State with five tackles.

Sam Houston State senior offensive lineman Travis Watson was named the SLC’s football student-athlete of the year.
