McNeese State couldn’t overcome an early Stephen F. Austin lead and dropped an 8-6 Southland Conference game to the Lumberjacks.
SFA used a six run third inning including a grand slam home run by Hunter Dozier to lead its attack.
The Cowboys had won Thursday’s contest by a 7-3 score
SFA also scored a single run in the first inning and one in the fourth for its eight runs.
The Cowboys, who trailed 8-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, broke loose for four runs in that frame but could have had more. With the bases loaded Blake Ellender belted a hit into centerfield but the throw into home plate caught McNeese pinch runner Matt Henry out at home on a force out.
Earlier in the inning Nick Eubanks had belted a two run homer, McNeese scored a run on a wild pitch and Jace Peterson brought another run home on a bases loaded walk.
However, with the bases still loaded, Lee Orr, who had homered in the sixth inning, struck out to end the threat.
Chase Wier went 5.1 innings for SFA and collected the victory, his second of the season, and Jason West got a save. Cowboy starter Matt Click, now 3-5, was tagged with the loss, hurling 2.1 innings of six hit, seven run ball.
Ryan Sampere came on in the third inning and pitched 6.2 innings of two hit, one run ball for the Cowboys.
The victory enabled SFA to remain in a tie for first place in the conference standings at 14-6 while the Cowboys fell to 9-11. Overall SFA is now 27-12 and McNeese is 20-21.
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
The Cowboys had seven hits in the game and Orr and Eubanks collected two each.
