Burns: I am happy being anonymous

World super-featherweight champion Ricky Burns says he is driven by his love of boxing rather than the promise of fame.

Burns will make the third defence of his WBO title against Nicky Cook at a packed Liverpool Echo Arena on July 16.

And his training camp in Stepps, Glasgow, was packed on Tuesday after the media were invited to watch him work out.

But the Scot says he would be just as happy fighting with no one watching.

“I do it because I need to,” he said.

Venus confident in defeat

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams’ woeful comeback from injury continues with defeat in both singles and doubles in the World Team Tennis tournament.

Williams, 34th in the WTA rankings, lost 5-4 to 66th ranked Christina McHale in a one-set singles match, before falling 5-1 in doubles with partner Rennae Stubbs at the hands of McHale and Madison Brengle.

But Williams, showing no sign of the injury that sidelined her from the Australian Open, went on to win 5-3 in mixed doubles with India’s Leander Paes and avowed that confidence was returning to her game.

Novak Djokovic ready to party but spares a thought for Andy Murray

On his way home to Belgrade to “celebrate like a Serb” after winning Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic took time out to give Andy Murray his full backing, but revealed the pressure of expectation that British fans heap on the world No4 “sometimes gets to him”.

Speaking at the scene of his resounding win over Rafael Nadal the previous day, Djokovic said: “It’s just a small percentage he needs to make the next final step. Definitely the first Wimbledon will be the toughest one to win. It’s not like any other tournament.

Hawke Named Swimming & Diving Coach

Ryan Hawke has been named the head coach of the Falcon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams according to Athletic Director Roger Ternes.

Hawke was the teams’ interim head coach in the 2010-11 season.

“We are pleased to remove the interim tag from the head swim position and appreciate Coach Hawke accepting the assignment,” said Ternes. “Ryan’s dedication and loyalty to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is very much appreciated.”

Hawke was a swimmer for the Falcon men’s team from 2001-05. He was the team’s captain and earned four letters. He is part of two UWRF record holding relay teams – the 200 and 400 freestyle teams.

Melzer-Benesova win Wimbledon mixed doubles title

 Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic clinched the Wimbledon mixed doubles championship with a straight-set victory on Sunday.

The ninth-seeded duo beat the fourth-seeded tandem of India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Russian Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-2 in a 51-minute match on Centre Court.

Melzer and Benesova did not drop a single set on their way to the title.

The winning team will split $150,000.
