DOHA, QATAR – Two of tennis’ all-time greats — Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer — were a pair of opening-round winners Tuesday at the season-opening $1.024 million Qatar Open.
The top-seeded former world No. 1 Nadal was tested in a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 victory over capable German Philipp Kohlschreiber, while the second-seeded former No. 1 Federer won his 18th straight match with a 6-2, 6-2 pasting of former top-five star Nikolay Davydenko in a rematch of last year’s final here, which was also won by Federer on the hardcourts at Khalifa Tennis Complex. Davydenko won this Australian Open tune-up two years ago.
Nadal got past Kohlschreiber in just over 2 1/2 hours, while Federer tuned up Davydenko in a mere 54 minutes.

The Falcon men’s hockey team was defeated by a score of 2-1 by the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College in a close, heated NCHA matchup at Hunt Arena on Wednesday night.
The Falcon men entered Wednesday night’s matchup against the Gusties only having lost one game thus far this season, a 5-2 thriller against the Blugolds of UW- Eau Claire on Dec 10. The Falcons responded with an 6-1 rout of their own against Eau Claire the following night.
At goaltender for the Falcons was their typical starting man, Scott Lewan . Lewan has helped lead the Falcons to one of their most successful starts to a season in recent memory, as the Falcons were ranked #4 in the nation according to the latest USCHO.com poll.

Rafael Nadal gave Spain a 1-0 lead against Argentina in the Davis Cup final, after easily beating Juan Mónaco 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.
Nadal eased to victory on his favoured clay at Estadio Olímpico in Seville, breaking his opponent seven times.
Mónaco held his first-service game but Nadal took control by winning the next seven games. The six-times French Open champion dominated many of the long rallies, which often ended with Nadal hitting a winner or Mónaco making an error.
The four-times champions, Spain, hope that David Ferrer will beat Juan Martín del Potro in the second singles rubber later on Friday to give them a commanding lead in the best-of-five tie.
