Andy Murray returns clean-shaven but bristling to Britain’s Davis Cup side

Andy Murray – a little angry, clean-shaven and returning to the Davis Cup after a contentious absence of nearly two years – is back in Scotland on Friday evening to lead Great Britain against Luxembourg, a team captained by a human rights lawyer on his annual leave.

The wilfully hairy Scot, fresh from reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon, objected to remarks by the former Cup captain David Lloyd earlier this week that he should shave his shaggy beard and tidy himself up if he wanted to break through at the highest level.

Russias former tennis icon Yevgeny Kafelnikov is targeting competing in the golf tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, local media reported on Friday.

Djokovic pulls out of Davis Cup match

HALMSTAD, Sweden — Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic withdrew from his scheduled singles match on Friday in the Davis Cup quarterfinals for Serbia against Sweden because of a knee injury.

Djokovic was slated to take on Ervin Eleskovic in the second of Friday’s opening singles matches. He will be replaced by Janko Tipsarevic.

The recently-anointed world No. 1 could still return for reverse singles on Sunday.

Djokovic led Serbia to the Davis Cup title last December and has carried that momentum into a sensational 2011 season that started with a title at the Australian Open. He has lost just once all year, a semifinal setback to Roger Federer at the French Open, and has won an incredible eight titles.
