CLEMSON, SC – The 23rd-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team gave No. 8 North Carolina all they could handle on Sunday at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. In the end, The Tar Heels (16-4, 6-0 ACC) outlasted Clemson (11-8, 4-3 ACC), 5-2, to hand the Tigers a second consecutive defeat to a top-ten opponent. Four singles matches went to three sets, and the match was not decided for more than four hours on the outdoor courts, which saw temperatures in the mid-eighties. Clemson received three-set singles wins from Beatrice Gumulya and Klara Vyskocilova, while Josipa Bek and Keri Wong each dropped three-set decisions to top-35 national opponents. KEY BISCAYNE, FLA. – Maria Sharapova again came up short at the Sony Ericsson Open, losing in the final for a fourth time in as many tries.
Agnieszka Radwanska denied the Russian star this time, claiming a 7-5, 6-4 victory on Saturday for her second title of 2012 and the ninth of her career.
It was also the biggest win for the 23-year-old native of Poland, who improved to 9-2 all-time in WTA finals. She also claimed the title in Dubai earlier this year and is 26-4 [not including a walkover loss in Malaysia] in 2012, with each of those losses coming against world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.
“I’m just very happy that I played my tennis since the beginning of the year and hope I can continue,” Radwanska said during the trophy presentation after the match.

The Falcon softball team split in a pair of games at the Augustana Tournament held Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
UWRF opened with a 4-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus, but then lost a 2-1 decision to the host school, Augustana College.
Hayley Buchanan hit a walk off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to help lead the Falcons to the win.
The Falcons scored four runs on nine hits and made no errors. GAC scored one run on four hits and had no errors. The Falcons scored a single run in the second and the three in the seventh. GAC scored its run in the seventh.
In the second Ashley Goettl led off with a single to right and she was sacrificed to second by Abbie Morris. Read full article…
