Flushing Meadows in lockdown

Last minute preparations for the US Open were aborted on Saturday after Flushing Meadows was shut down in anticipation of Hurricane Irene.

Players were told to find alternative practice venues as officials took the unusual step of locking up the National Tennis Center.

Several top players cancelled their press conferences as the first showers arrived on Saturday afternoon with the hurricane the main topic of conversation.

“It’s somewhat scary, because we don’t know how hard it’s going to hit us,” said five-time champion Roger Federer.

“I’ve got family. We’re in New York City.

Cowgirls defeat La. Tech

The McNeese State Cowgirls got its first win of the season in their home opener against Louisiana Tech Friday night at Cowgirl Field.

McNeese (1-2) got its first goal of the season from sophomore Johna Germany in the fourth min.Callie Allbright sent the pass to Germany who turned and shot from 18 yards out and placed it in the top right corner. Djokovic is top seed at U.S. Open

NEW YORK — Last year’s runner-up and current world No. 1 Novak Djokovic has been installed as the top seed at the U.S. Open, which will get underway Monday in New York.

The three-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who lost to 10-time major titlist and former No. 1 Rafael Nadal in last year’s U.S. Open finale, is the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion and an amazing 57-2 this year, including a whopping nine titles already.

The top-five seeds in New York will be the two-time U.S. Open runner-up Djokovic, the reigning U.S. and French Open champion and Wimbledon runner-up Nadal, five-time U.S. Open champ and 2011 French Open runner-up Roger Federer, Aussie Open runner-up and 2008 U.S. Open finalist Andy Murray, and gritty Spaniard David Ferrer.

Soccer Team Has First Practice of 2011

The Falcon soccer team had its first practice of the 2011 season on Friday afternoon at Ramer Field.

Coach Sean McKuras is in his 10th season with the Falcons and brings a 90-70-15 record into the season.

Fifteen returning letter winners are back for the Falcons led by Carlin Bunting, Alyssa Manor and Cassie Stang who were all named to the 2010 All-WIAC team. Bunting is a junior midfielder, Stang is a junior defender and Manor is a sophomore forward. The Falcons finished 10-8-2 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC last year.

The Falcons open their 2011 season on Sept. 1 when they host St. Olaf College at Ramer Field. Action starts at 3 p.m.

Ilya Bryzgalov wants to deliver Stanley Cup to Philadelphia

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, with the Coyotes during the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, has signed with the Flyers and wants to bring Philadelphia its first hockey title since 1975.

No, not because the Stanley Cup doesn’t call either locale home. The rain and dreary conditions prompted Bryzgalov to poke a little fun at Philly. Weather aside, the NHL All-Star goaltender is excited to join the Flyers, who introduced him on Thursday.

He says he’s up for the challenge of winning Philadelphia’s first ice hockey championship since 1975.

“This is a team with rich history,” Bryzgalov said. “The highest goal is to win the Cup. That’s what this game is all about.
