The British No1, Elena Baltacha, booked her place in the second round of the Citi Open in Maryland with a straight-sets win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

The sixth seed claimed three breaks in the first set on her way to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory. In the next round she will play France’s Virginie Razzano, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Japan’s Misaki Doi.

Heather Watson followed Baltacha into the second round as she beat Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 6-1. The British No3 raced into a 3-0 lead against a player who, at 103 in the world, is ranked one place higher than her, before being pegged back to 3-3.

But the Guernsey teenager battled hard to win the first set before racing through the second.

Winning the only thing for Serena

Tennis News No Comments »

The numbers don’t lie.

Serena Williams is 29 years old and ranked No. 172 in the world. The No. 1 ranking, which she lost to Caroline Wozniacki last October, is a fading memory and it would appear she is on the downside of her tennis career.

But Williams, her legacy assured thanks to 13 Grand Slam titles, doesn’t seem interested in talking about retirement.

She flashed a little of the defiant attitude that helped her ascend to the top of the tennis world when she was asked Wednesday if she was nearing the end of the road.

Either that or, well, she really is getting old and is having trouble remembering things like her age.

“I’m actually 26,” Williams said during a Rogers Cup media conference call Wednesday.

Fish sets up final repeat

Tennis News No Comments »

Defending champion Mardy Fish will meet fellow American John Isner in the final of the Atlanta Tennis Championships for the second consecutive year.

World number nine Fish ensured he would defend his crown after he cast aside 19-year-old compatriot Ryan Harrison 6-2 6-4.

That set up a re-match of last year’s final after Isner edged a big-serving duel with Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 7-5 6-7 (7/3) 6-1 in two hours and 29 minutes.

Third seed Isner fired down 28 aces, and while Muller weight in with 16 of his own, it was not enough to prevent another all-American final.

Emotional Andy Murray completes Davis Cup win for Great Britain

Tennis News No Comments »

A tearful Andy Murray recorded his third straight-sets victory in the Davis Cup tie against Luxembourg to send Great Britain into a promotion decider.

Murray defeated the Luxembourg No1, Gilles Muller, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 to put the hosts into an unassailable 3-1 lead at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

The British No1, who was again watched by a large contingent of family and friends from his home town of Dunblane, broke down in tears as he was interviewed on court after the match.

When asked how much it meant to win in front of a Scottish crowd, Murray said: “I don’t get the chance to come back here very often, so…”

The world No4 could not finish his sentence and wiped away tears before describing the crowd as “amazing”.

Murray put on an impressive show for his home crowd to set up a Europe/Africa Group II play-off against Belarus or Hungary, who were tied at 2-2 going into their final rubber.

The Great Britain captain, Leon Smith, will be desperate for his best player to make the tie, which comes in the week after the US Open in September, after he turned this contest on its head following James Ward’s opening defeat by Muller on Friday.

Murray followed his doubles win alongside his brother Jamie with another commanding victory, this time against a much higher standard of opponent, who is ranked 81 in the world.

Murray took more than twice as long as he did to beat the unranked Laurent Bram without losing a game on Friday, but he was in complete command against Muller over the one hour and 45 minutes.

The Scot lost just four points on his service, less than he did against Bram, and produced 14 aces.
