Sunday’s marquee men’s final at Wimbledon will pit top-seeded reigning champion Rafael Nadal against second- seeded new No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Nadal, who will officially be supplanted atop the rankings by Djokovic on Monday, got past hobbled heavy British crowd favorite Andy Murray 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, while a high-flying second-seeded Djokovic secured a berth in his first career Wimbledon finale by defeating 12th-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-7 (9-11), 6-3 on the famed Centre Court at the venerable All England Club.

Djokovic secured the No. 1 ranking with the victory over Tsonga, as a trip into the final this week guaranteed him the top spot for the first time in his great career. He’s the first-ever men’s No.

Panthers go wild improving team, getting to cap floor

Defenseman Ed Jovanovski, here with the Coyotes in 2009, is one of seven players the Panthers have signed this week.

After acquiring Tomas Kopecky’s rights earlier this week and signing him to a four-year deal worth an average of $3 million, Tallon used the first day of the free agency signing period to sign Tomas Fleischmann (four years, $4.5 million average), Ed Jovanovski (four years, $4.125 million), Scotte Upshall (four years, $3.5 million), Marcel Goc (three years, $1.7 million) and Jose Theodore (two years, $1.5 million).

He then surrendered a second- and third-round pick to acquire Kris Versteeg, who has one year remaining on his contract at a little more than $3 million.

Matt Collins named McNeese baseball assistant coach

Matt Collins has joined the McNeese baseball coaching staff. Joins the Cowboys from the ULM coaching staff

Matt Collins, who was a career .334 collegiate hitter, has joined the McNeese State baseball coaching staff as an assistant coach.

He’s a graduate of UL Monroe where he played on the school’s Sun Belt championship team of 2008 and collected the 10th most hits (79) in school history in 2009.

Collins replaces Clay Van Hook who recently signed on as a volunteer coach at Rice University.

Cowboy head coach Terry Burrows said that Collins will move into the role that Van Hook played, taking over a recruiting area and helping with hitting and fielding.

M. Golf. Mills Advances to Final Four of US Public Links

Clemson, Sc – Clemson junior Corbin Mills won his fourth straight match at the US Public Links Championship with a 4 & 3 victory over Andrew Vijarro of Bend, OR on Friday. Mills now advances to the Final Four of the event against Harris English of the University of Georgia. That match will start at 4:30 eastern time today. The winner will play a 36-hole championship on Saturday. The winner of the US Public Links typically receives an invitation to the Masters.

This year’s match play of the US Public Links is being played at the Old Macdonald course at Bandon Dunes, OR.

Friday morning, Mills dominated the match with Vijarro, a member of the University of Oregon golf team who was playing in his home state. Read full article…
